The Sport
What is Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art focused on technique and leverage rather than strength. Instead of striking, BJJ teaches you to take an opponent to the ground, control their position and apply joint locks or chokes to force a submission.
Because it relies on mechanical principles — angles, weight distribution, leverage — rather than raw physical power, BJJ works for people of all sizes and builds. A smaller, technically proficient practitioner can genuinely control a larger, stronger opponent. This is the core promise of BJJ and it holds true on the mat every single day.
It is often called human chess. Every roll is a live problem-solving exercise where you're reading your partner, planning several moves ahead and adapting in real time. The physical and mental challenge is unlike anything else.
Grappling, not striking
BJJ is ground-based. No punching or kicking — the focus is on controlling position and applying submissions.
Technique over strength
Correct mechanics beat physical power. This is what makes BJJ accessible and effective for everyone.
Live sparring from early on
Unlike many martial arts, BJJ practitioners spar at close to full resistance, which accelerates learning and tests what actually works.
A lifelong pursuit
The BJJ journey — from white belt to black belt — typically takes 10+ years. There is always more to learn, which is exactly the point.
Most Students Begin With No Experience
You do not need a martial arts background to start BJJ at Wave. The vast majority of our students walked through the door for the first time with absolutely no grappling experience — and they are now some of our most dedicated and skilled practitioners.
What to Expect
A Typical Class
Classes run 60–90 minutes and follow a consistent structure that works for all experience levels.
Warm Up
Every class begins with a structured warm-up designed to prepare the body for grappling. This typically includes movement drills, solo techniques and light cardiovascular work to raise the heart rate and loosen the joints.
Technique Instruction
The coach demonstrates the techniques for the session — usually two or three related moves that build on each other. Instruction is detailed and methodical, with attention to positioning, timing and mechanics.
Partner Drills
Students pair up and drill the techniques together. Repetition builds muscle memory. Your partner acts as a cooperative training tool at this stage — the focus is on learning the movement correctly, not competing.
Sparring (Optional)
Classes typically close with live sparring — known as rolling. This is where you apply what you've learned under live resistance. Sparring is optional, particularly for newer students, and is always conducted in a safe and controlled environment.

Why Train
The Benefits of
Training BJJ
BJJ offers something that most fitness activities, sports and martial arts simply cannot match — a complete package of physical conditioning, practical skill, mental development and genuine community.
Start TrainingFitness
BJJ is a full-body workout that builds strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination. Most students notice significant physical changes within weeks of training. It gets you fit in a way that feels engaging rather than like a chore.
Self Defence
BJJ teaches you to control and neutralise a larger, stronger opponent using technique and leverage. It's widely regarded as the most effective martial art for real-world self defence — and the skills you develop are genuine.
Confidence
Knowing you can handle yourself changes how you carry yourself. Progress on the mat — earning stripes, belts and improving week on week — builds a deep, authentic confidence that carries into every area of your life.
Stress Relief
When you're focused on solving a live grappling problem, everything else disappears. BJJ is one of the most effective stress relief tools available — you walk in with the weight of the day and walk out feeling clear-headed.
Community
The relationships formed on the mat are unlike most others. Training partners become close friends. Wave BJJ is a genuine community — welcoming, inclusive and united by a shared love of the sport.
